Exploring the mountains 02/13/2010
As i write this my friends are all off on a trailblazing ride to explore the mountains around the farm. Unfortunately i am sick and can't go! Chris has been doing some major clearing in the lagoons that edge the property, they are great for growing grass as they have a permanent supply of water, they have had to be really careful though as Alonzo killed a big snake! Yikes. We have been busy trying to keep the peace this week between Julias horse Cascabel and our horse Viagual. We have introduced Cascabel as Julia wants to use him as lead horse on the tours. Poor Viagual has been top dog for ever and now he has been usurped by the new comer! Poor thing, he is most upset. Chris is doing more and more barefoot trimming which is great and he is really getting a small business going which helps pay the bills! Off now to the feed store to spend it all!!! Have a good weekend all and Happy Birthday for Monday Mum. Love you xxxxxxxxxx Add Comment Finally we have some rain 02/08/2010
Living in the tropics is wonderful and i love it, but dry season can be a hard one! After weeks of dust and extreme heat we were glad to be woken up to the sound of rain! Finally we can open the windows without tons of dust flying in. We had to cancel the tour this morning due to the rain, but the tour should go on this afternoon. I am expecting very muddy horses when we get there. Quad with no brakes! 02/07/2010
Sundays is always chores day here at the farm. Alonzo who works for us, taking care of the horses with us, has Sundays off. Chris and i put all the fodder out for the horses, today was my turn to drive the quad bike to the top of the hill with the trailer load of grass! I guess i dont have much weight to hold the back end down and i ended up sliding with the grass behind me all the way back to the bottom and then jack knifing at the bottom! Needless to say my hero of a husband spent the whole time at the top of the hill laughing at me making my descent to the bottom! Thankfully the day got better and we had a lovely lunch with my Aunt Penny and Uncle Bob who are visiting from Canada. It is always fun with them!! A ride to a mountain village 02/06/2010
WOW today was amazing. I rode with some friends looking for a new ride to take the tourists on , and we found an amazing one. We rode around the mountain road to the tiny village (pueblo in spanish) of Montilemar. There we met with a man called Johnny Quiros who owns a butterfly garden. www.butterflycr.com. He showed us around this place which was so cute and really rustic, we loved it. Then we rode over to the church that looked like something out of a Hansel and Gretal story. Next to this was the traditional bull ring (they ride them here in Costa Rica, not fight them!). After a beer and some fried plantains, we rode back town the river that runs beside the town all the way to our farm!! Thanks Julia and Sheila for a great days riding! Pura Vida indeed! Life in the jungle 02/05/2010
Well life is settling down now here in Costa Rica. We are proud to say the new farm is proving to be a roaring success with many clients new and old returning saying it is one of the best things they have done in their lifes! V The new rancho got finished yesterday so i will get up some photos of it tomorrow. We have had a change around on the horses, my horse Beau has now gone to a wonderful family up in the mountains and their 14 year old daughter has fallen in love with him. I am so happy it will be a great home for him, although i will miss him! Julia our guide has moved her horse Cascabel over so she can use him for guiding. She is spending so much time at the farm now that it makes sense to have him here, he is a sweetheart. Just hope the other horses think so when they meet! Chris is recovering from a sprained ankle, he was bringing in the palm for the new rancho when he slipped off the back of the tractor and messed up his ankle! Ouch. Chris has been doing several new clients for barefoot trimming which is great. A one year old colt laid down and went to sleep straight after his trim, that was so sweet. So many horses have such trauma when they have their feet done for the first time with shoes, that to see this after barefoot was very satisfying. Had a great night over at Rancho Palomo Blanca last night, Chris went to trim and then the girls got some wine out! Fun to have some down time with horsey friends! | AuthorDiscovery Horse Tours are dedicated to proving that working horses can be treated with love and dignity. ArchivesJanuary 2012 Categories |
